What is your carbon footprint, roughly?

Eight questions, about a minute, and a number at the end. Every one of them changes the answer - the ones that did not were removed. No email address and no company name. The calculation runs in your browser; the only thing that ever leaves it is an address, if you choose to use the optional address lookup.

Your organisation

Enough to size the estimate. We do not ask for your company name, and there is nothing to submit.

The rest are treated as site or field staff. Office headcount drives your floor area, and floor area drives the energy estimate.

Only used to save you guessing a commute distance further down, and only when you ask for it. It is not part of the estimate, and a postcode on its own is enough.

Company vehicles

Vehicles the business owns or leases, asked by the journey rather than by the year. Almost nobody knows their annual mileage; most people know roughly how far a van goes and how often. Leave the count at zero for anything you do not have.

What you buy

Almost always the largest single line, and the one most people have never counted. Everything you pay a supplier for carries the emissions it took to make.

Electricity

Optional. Without it we model your electricity from headcount and floor area, which is what the questionnaire has always done, but a meter reading is a measurement and a model is not.

You can find this on your energy bill. Leave it blank to have it modelled.

The one exception is the optional address lookup: if you use it, the address you type goes to OpenStreetMap to be turned into a coordinate. It is not sent to us, and nothing else you enter is sent anywhere.

Every question above changes this number. A certified footprint adds the ones that cannot be asked in two minutes - your national grid, your sector, your actual meter readings and your real supply chain - which is most of the distance between an estimate and a figure you can put in a tender.
